Indie Author Spotlight

November 1, 2013

I am so excited to have been given the opportunity to interview and highlight THE Sienna Mynx.  She is truly one of my FAVORITE authors.   Sienna Mynx was my first introduction into the Interracial/Multicultural Romance genre.  Once I started reading her books I could not stop.  She was recommended to me by my dear friend Angela Coleman, and I have been referring her (Sienna) books to anyone who will listen, ever since!  I hope you enjoy meeting this PHENOMENAL AUTHOR and DIVA EXTRORDINAIRE!! I also hope you enjoy reading this spotlight, as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

Sienna Mynx was born in the beautiful city of Miami, Florida in 1971.  She began writing at the early age of eight.  The oldest of two childrent with a school teacher for a mother, she was taught the power of words and of the countless adventures that could be found between the pages of a book.  While other children her age shared an interest in music, sports, or even Girl Scouts, Sienna's interests never varied.

By the age of 13 she had a private collection of drawings and short stories based on heroines she could identify with, but who lived in imaginative worlds far removed from her suburban upbringing.  She'd share them with anyone who cared to read.

Her favorite pass-time of "people watching," as provided her a wealth of material to use.  Equipped with her laptop and vivid imagination writing spots included: any open park, coffee shop, or her favorite book store cafe.  Everything and everyone was an opportunity to create:  the unruly child, dragged by the weary mother or the lover's quarrel that ends with you man in tears.  The dialogue and conflict be it public or blasting from a television screen, is a constant backdrop in her creative writing process.

Also an avid reader of romantic fiction and lover of television soap operas, Sienna adapted two distinct writing persona's T.A. Ford who is now a published author of sensual romance and Sienna Mynx who explores the darker side of romance across genres.  Currently the Diva has published over 20 multicultural romances.

The Diva lives in southern Georgia and is the proud aunt of three.  She is employed as an IT Professional for a technology company and enjoys the arts, writing and blogging.  To learn more about Sienna Mynx, check out her "Follow Sienna Mynx" section below.

CRJO:       When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
SM:           When I realized my Barbie dolls would never talk back. LOL! I’ve always had a big imagination and play time, reading books, it was never enough. The best way to channel that energy for me was to write it all down.

CRJO:     What is the first thing you ever wrote?

SM:          Can’t remember the first thing I ever wrote. But the first book I ever wrote and published is Zoe. The original name of the story was Forbidden Fruit.

CRJO:    How would you describe your writing style?

SM:        It has a screenwriter appeal. Most that read my books compare them to serial drama on television. It’s very visual and interactive with many side characters. And yes there is plenty of drama!

CRJO:      I love the attention to detail in your novels. In choosing locations like Italy and Scotland, how much of your time is spent researching these locations to ensure that the reader is getting an authentic depiction of the world you are presenting?

SM:          I’ve never met people from the places I’ve written about or visited those places myself. I love writing outside experiences with couples that are across the world. And I love to travel.

CRJO:      Have you personally been to the countries you write about? How did those experiences affect your writing process?

SM:          I’ve been to Italy, and some other places I’ve written about. I’m challenged when I visit a place and write about it to keep it ‘real’. So it’s always better for my storytelling.

CRJO:      I’ve found myself in debates recently with some of my blog followers on the use of the terms “multicultural romance/interracial romance. Many feel the books should just be labeled “romance” novels so that more “mainstream” readers have a chance to experience them. How do you feel about these labels? Why not just list the books as “Contemporary Romance/Adult Fiction?”

SM:         The industry labels me because of the color of my skin not the content of my work. I’ve come to accept it. And that’s not good. Personally I think ALL romance should be multicultural. We live in a multicultural world. They don’t have to be IR to be multicultural and reflect the people in our lives. I doubt relabeling our work as just ‘contemporary’ would work. But I can understand why some think it will.

CRJO:      Do you feel that your books being categorized under the genre of “IR” limits you to a certain type of reader?

SM:          Sure. We seek what we know, what’s familiar, what we covet in romance. If it was just Women’s Fiction maybe not. But in Romance the readers seem to respond to segregation. I have black readers who refuse to read my work because the lead male is not an ‘ethnic’ male. Too sad for them. They are missing out on some good reads!

CRJO:      I think I have read every single one of your books and LOVED each and every one of them. If you had to pick ONE book or series which would you choose as the book/series you are most proud of?

SM:          My Battaglia Series fills me with the most pride. I love my work on these books. I love what I’ve created. I’m growing as a writer because of it.

CRJO:      Your alphas are known to make many a woman swoon. Which one of your alphas has that effect on you and why?

SM:          I have a love affair with each. But Melvin Reed makes my knees weak each time I read him. Still can’t figure out how I managed to come up with that character.

CRJO:      I love that you write strong heroines as well. I am going to pose a similar question for the ladies of your books. Which heroine stands out to you the most when you discuss your novels?

SM:         I liked Tia from the Melvin and Tia series. I also like Mira and Marietta from the Battaglia Series because I’m having so much fun writing them.

CRJO:      Do you see any of yourself in your characters and if so, who?

SM:          There’s a little of me in each characters. Tia is closer to me, but I also see myself in the other ladies as well.

CRJO:      Can't Read Just One is a blog that focuses on supporting Indie & New authors. What advice would you give other Indie/New authors in the process of releasing their first book?

SM:          Understand the industry. Understand the business. Befriend a author and ask about their mistakes. The lessons they’ve learned the hard way. Focus on polishing your content. Get good editors and book cover designs. Position your work in front of readers who crave the same things you crave in romance. Join a good critique group. You have to do more than write a book and push it out to the public. Your success is based solely on the commitment you will make to ‘you’.

CRJO:     Do you have a goal as an author in which you are trying to accomplish?
SM:         Yes, I want to redeem myself through my work. I made critical mistakes as an indie author. Trusted the wrong people. Published books I knew could have been better. I want to become the author I know I can be. So I will write everyday and publish a variety of work until I am.

CRJO:    Can you share with us what you are working on now and when we can look forward to it’s release?

SM:        I’m working on La Famiglia. And ,my tentative release date is in December. Praying for a December release!

CRJO:    Being a seasoned author now, I’m sure you’ve been interviewed by several individuals. What is a question you always wish is posed to you but is rarely asked?

SM:        Hmm…. Maybe a question about why I keep the drama alive in my stories. It’s tiring for some readers, and not typical in traditional romance. I guess my answer is simple. I want my books to have a lasting effort on my reader. Good or bad you must walk away with a strong opinion of my body of work. I live for the emotional conflict, joy or self revelations you get from my tales.

CRJO:   I’m a proud member of the “Sienna Mynx Lounge” and I know you have a strong and large following of women who love and support you. What closing comments do you have for your many fans?

SM:  I’m blessed. With supporters come the haters. I’ve had some tough times with people who weren’t as supportive, but my readers always remind me of why I must keep doing what I do. And my readers support sustain me. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful fans. I can’t stop giving praise for all the support they give me.

Can't Read Just One is proud to spotlight Violette Dubrinsky, bestselling author of several fantasy, paranormal romance and contemporary romance novels.  Violette is, hands down, one of my FAVORITE writers.  It has totally been a pleasure to chat with her, laugh with her, interact in her "Fantasyland," and read every amazing book that that the phenomenal brain of hers can think up.  I am proud to offer you a small glimpse into Ms. Dubrinsky's life as an author, and showcase and review her most recent release (and one of my new favorite books may I add) The Masseuse.  I hope you enjoy viewing this Indie Author Spotlight, as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Most importantly try her books!!

BUY.READ.REVIEW!!!

Violette Dubrinsky is Amazon’s bestselling author of the Dark God, Warrior, Crescent Moon, and Moonlight Sagas. She is currently a full time graduate student and part-time writer. She enjoys creating stories with strong heroines and the leading heroes who “tame” them…and by tame, she means, learns to accept their stubborn, unchangeable ways. Violette is currently working on the sequel to The Masseuse, sequel(s) to Taken By Moonlight, sequel(s) to Warrior, and a host of standalone stories.

Violette can be reached at violettedubrinsky@gmail.com, on her website or on Facebook. She loves feedback so feel free to email her, leave comments on her blog, or Facebook her (the quickest way to get a response). And be sure to check out the free reads of her website.

Q. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
A.  I might have had the ‘eh..this is fun’ discovery pre-puberty but I really knew I wanted to write, really write and publish, when I wrote Warrior and although it was 160k words, I smiled through it and when I was finished and I remember thinking, “Wow. I could do this for a living.”

Q.  Judging by your bio, you are a very busy woman. Successful writer AND graduate student! How do you balance it all?
A. I don’t sleep. I’m kidding! Sort of. Lol. I try hard to do it all but sometimes things get neglected. I always catch up though on whatever was neglected and manage to balance things that way. Still, when you love something, you find time to do it.

Q.   Since The Masseuse is your most recent release, what was the inspiration behind the novel?
A. Honestly, the inspiration behind the story was my wanting to write a sensual story about a masseuse who looked like Daniel Henney. (smiles) It’s true.

Q.  Jezebel is such a strong independent character, did you have anyone in mind while writing her?
 A. I love independent women, especially the difficult ones who are a bit too much at times but funny in how “out there” their thoughts are. I didn’t really have anyone in mind...well, except Tyra Banks for an idea of how she looked, but not for the character traits. I just wanted her to be this strong female who didn’t need any male for anything, who meets this simple masseuse and takes to him.

Q.   I’m a huge fan of IR/Multicultural Romance novels, no matter the genre, and Ramsey is totally HOT FIYA!! When inspiration comes to you, do you know right away what race your alphas will be, or does it come to you as the story progresses?
 A. Thank you! I know right away the races of the characters. Like, with the Masseuse, I knew Ramsey was part Korean and part something else, and I knew his name was Ramsey so I thought Korean Egyptian? Why not? ;)

Q.  If you had to choose a character out of any of your books that is most like you, which character would it be and why?
 A. A character most like me? I wish I could be more like my characters. lol. But the characters most like me would have to be Jezebel(The Masseuse) and Jaisyn (Warrior). It’s not easy for a guy to impress me or win me over. I’m a skeptical woman with the whole independent vibe going on, but underneath it all, I just want an alpha who’ll sweep me off my feet and put up with my crazy because he loves me. Don’t we all? That’s half the reason I created these alpha characters. Lol.

Q.  With so many novels under your belt, can you identify a favorite? Or is each release like your favorite new baby?
A. Honestly, they are all like newborns. I get nervous each time I release a new story because I feel like I’ve let my baby into the world and I’m so scared for him/her. It’s strange. I love them all. Once they’ve been in the world for a few weeks, the feeling of nervousness fades a bit. It truly is like releasing your kid into society.

Q.   Can't Read Just One is a blog that focuses on supporting Indie & New authors. What advice would you give other Indie/New authors in the process of releasing their first book?
 A. I’d say do it! If you’ve done your research and are committed to putting out your best work, do it. Just research, research, research, and do all the necessary things to make the book reader ready.

Q.  You are a paranormal romance GODDESS, now you’ve knocked me off my feet with The Masseuse in contemporary romance…so what’s next? Do you think you will test the waters of a different genre?
A. Ha! Thank you! What’s next? Well…I love paranormal/fantasy romance and I love suspense, but I love so many other genres and you’ll be seeing me in those as well. I currently have a Sci-fi piece that I’ll explore later, a historical piece (no paranormal in this one) I’ll also explore later, who knows? I love writing in different genres because it helps you grow as a writer and it’s fun to change it up.

Q.  Being a seasoned author now, I’m sure you’ve been interviewed by several individuals. What is a question you always wish is posed to you but is rarely asked?
A. I’d love to be asked about my writing process and how I write. I write in a “bad” way. I call it bad because its completely disorganized but it works for me. At any given time, I have about 5 manuscripts in progress. It’s usually more but once I’ve started them, I commit to finishing them. It’s just that they get written when the Muse is ready to write them. What does that mean? That means the Muse dictates my life. ;)

 1. Favorite color: Blue

2. Favorite food: Chowmein

3. Favorite movie: I
love so many movies…this is hard. I’d have to say, Jurassic Park.

4. Favorite book: Octavia Butler’s Kindred.

5. Favorite song: Take on Me  by Aha

 6. Name a famous person you would choose to be stranded on an island with:
Henry Cavill (yes, I’d love being stranded with Henry because he’s such a gentleman)

When Jezebel Carter agreed to a spa session to appease her sickly sister, she expects one thing and one thing only: to leave tension-free. It’s a spa, after all. Instead, she leaves with memories of a gorgeous man with talented fingers, who probably doesn't work at the spa and is a possible pervert.

Ramsey Stone is no pervert. He's a licensed masseuse, and he wants more than one session with Jezebel. For a man who prides himself on his control, even he admits he's smitten with the beautiful, but headstrong financial executive. He's determined to have her, and before long, Ramsey succeeds on his personal quest to make Jezebel his.

There's just one problem: Ramsey harbors a secret that could tear Jezebel from his arms and upturn their lives

HOW TO PURCHASE

I got the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Mr.  K.J. Ramsey Stone, to dig a little deeper into the mind of this sexy  international business man.  He stole our heart in The Masseuse.  Let's see if we can get a little more background on this remarkable man, while we wait to see what comes next in the sequel to The Masseuse...

CRJO: Since we all know that you can handle a woman that doesn’t beat around the bush, with all   your money and influence, what made you choose being a Masseuse for a career?
Ramsey: Hi Anitra. Thank you for having me. I think it’s important to find your own path in life despite the hand you were dealt. I received my license on a whim--it was something to do over the summer-- and learning about the different ways to relax your body was something that intrigued me.

CRJO: Is Jezebel truly the first woman to get the “red cream treatment” from you at your salon?
Ramsey: Yes, she is. Jezebel is the first woman I’ve ever used red cream…for the purpose it was used…on. (smiles) She’s special and a special lady deserves special treatment.

CRJO: What was college, or even high school, like for Ramsey Stone? Have you always been this popular with the ladies?
Ramsey:  I’d say I did well with the ladies. (smirks) In high school and college, I had a close knit circle and I was relatively known. They were a means to an end so I wasn’t particularly fond of either. Business school was different. I enjoyed being there, learning how to create, develop, brand and network a start-up. But on the ladies: I did well.

CRJO:  We know your family is “specific” about the women you date, so is Jezebel the first time you’ve dated outside of your race?
Ramsey:  I don’t discriminate when it comes to women. Jezebel isn’t the first woman who’s been of a different race, but she’s the first woman I’ve ever been serious about.

CRJO:      What does Ramsey do for fun?
Ramsey:  For fun, I hang out with Jezebel and Lily. They’re very entertaining, especially when you put them together. Lily’s also fond of Jez because she indulges her newfound makeup obsession. They talk about those shiny lip glosses and the strange black eye pens. I also play basketball when I have the chance.

CRJO:   You stated that you don’t normally keep women around that long, what made Jez different?
Ramsey:  She’s brilliant, shrewd, guileless, fun to be around, so sexy I can barely keep my hands off of her, independent, loves me although she tries to hide it in fear that I’ll break her heart, and she makes me feel…whole. What’s not to love about Jezebel Carter?

CRJO:      You and Jez went through a lot recently. When the feds raided her home, and you saw the woman you love man handled and handcuffed, what was the first thing that ran through your mind?
Ramsey:  I had a few violent thoughts but mainly I wanted to protect her. I wanted to shield her from that. She should have never experienced any of that and I’m sorry that she did.

CRJO:     I’m sure answering the last question took a lot out of you, so let’s lighten things up a bit. We all know how much you love Jez, HOWEVER, since she isn’t around today, let’s have a little fun at her expense. What would you say is her most annoying habit or trait?
Ramsey:  Ah, you’re going to get me in trouble I see. I love all of her traits, even the annoying ones, but that wasn’t the question so I’ll answer what you asked. Her most annoying trait is that Jezebel Carter over-thinks everything. One example was when she thought I was a perverted stalker. (laughs) She just wouldn’t let the thought go despite common sense telling her I wasn’t. It’s just how her brain works. She’s tenacious.

CRJO:  Now that we have potentially got you in trouble with that last question, lol, let’s make it up to her. What is it that you love most about her?
Ramsey:  I love her heart. Jezebel has a big heart. She guards it well, but she’s the most giving person I know. She also loves hard, and once you’re loved by that woman, she’ll do anything to protect you. She’ll be a great mother one day.

CRJO:  I know your mother doesn’t live in the states but, race aside, how do you think she would feel about Jezebel and your relationship? Do you think she would love her as much as you do?
Ramsey:
Like Jezebel, my Umma is special. I doubt she’d judge Jezebel on something as trivial as race. If my mother meets Jezebel, she’ll love her. It would be hard not to love Jez.

Picked up Violette Dubrinsky's The Masseuse late one night and DID NOT put it down until it was complete!!! This woman, every time I read one of her books, I'm like "Under a Crescent Moon" is my favorite Violette D. book, then I read "Taken By Moonlight" and I'm like NO this is my favorite Violette D. book, who couldn't fall in love with Conall, then "Colorblind" comes out and I fall in love with Leon and the beautiful Penny and I just know this is my fave Violette D. book....but NOOOO, she has to go and write "The Masseuse" and OMG, hands down right now this IS my fave Violette Dubrinsky book! lol OK....maybe I just love ALL of her books!!!

Jezebel is a highly intelligent, beautiful, successful business woman, but head strong, a tad bossy, and slightly uptight.  She goes with her sister to get a massage and encounters the swoon-worthy, drool-inducing Ramsey Stone.  He not only handles all of Jezebel's independent ways, but he finds it endearing and it draws him closer to her. It doesn't take long for things to steam up in this novel. You get a taste of how great the book is gonna be from page 1, and then the hotness level increases...the love is all consuming, and the twists and turns around every corner adds to the suspense that just builds and builds all the way to the end. Neither one of these characters is looking for love, yet love finds them. OK, Ms. Dubrinsky, please, please, please don't make us wait too long for the sequel, you totally left us hanging, breathing hard about to pass out at the end of The Masseuse with all of the possibilities of what's going to happen next!!!

I give this book 5 ENTHUSIASTIC HOT STARS!!! Can't wait to read more from this amazing author!!

When Azaleigh Montclaire inherits the assets of a deceased aunt she’s met twice, to say she’s shocked is a huge understatement. Still, she’s thrown completely off kilter to find out those assets also include a six-and-a-half foot, dark-haired, green-eyed giant of a man who falls to his knees and swears to protect her with his life. Not only is he gorgeous, the man—creature—claims he’s her Protector, or in human terms: zombie. After the unexpected death of her father, Jaisyn takes control of the kingdom, expecting to be called upon to defend her claim to a throne previously held by men. What she does not expect is the arrival of Vulcan Mor’an, the High King of the Northlands and the one man she despises above all, who seems to believe he is now the rightful ruler of her kingdom. Even as he provides support for his claim, Jaisyn refuses to listen. She will meet Vulcan Mor’an on the battlefield before willingly handing her kingdom to a barbarian she blames for the death of a loved one!

Born to a ruthless warlord of a father, Vulcan Mor’an is powerful, fierce and quite deadly. His prowess is legendary, and those who don’t fear the Northern Wolf, respect his skill on the battlefield and his reach beyond it. Vulcan prides himself on his strength, and with it, his lack of weakness. That is, until he encounters a spitfire princess intent on murdering him in his sleep. Jaisyn of Lytheria is unlike any lady Vulcan has encountered. In her golden body is a fierce adversary, a woman who does not cower in his presence like most but fights his every step with a stubbornness that both irritates and captivates him. This princess may become the one person capable of bringing him to his knees.

Warrior is the tale of two feuding royals, their attraction despite their differences, and the consequences that come as a result of their union. With various obstacles threatening to tear them apart, Jaisyn St. Ives and Vulcan Mor’an struggle to keep their relationship afloat, and with it, their very lives

Hell hath no fury like a goddess scorned...

Scorned by Thanatos, one of the powerful Dark Gods, Aphrodite concocts a plan for revenge, the end result of which is Thanatos being stripped of his godhood and sent to live among humans.

And the pure shall redeem him...

Simone Randall is your average New York City journalist. She’s always looking for a good story, so when she’s invited to the most anticipated Halloween event of the year, she’s definitely going...even if she is a bit bummed at her lackluster life at the age of twenty-six. What she doesn’t expect is her fiery attraction to the sexy, dark haired, grey-eyed god at the event.

Thanatos does not believe in the “uniting mates” theme of the Ball, and he’s there for one reason only: to speak to the god of all gods about the reinstatement of his powers. His attraction to Simone comes as a surprise—be it welcome—as she is not his usual type.

Will Simone be his salvation or will his attraction to this human prove more dangerous than he anticipates?

It has been such a pleasure to meet and get to know Brittainy!  She is one of the nicest ladies I've met while blogging.  Chatting with her, her sweet spirit just SHINES through!! Reading her novel I would have never guessed this was her first book.  Brittainy writes with a polished, experienced, hand, and it was a total JOY to experience her characters and fall in love with them.  Here's your chance to get to know this awesome lady.  After you peruse this spotlight,
GO BUY HER BOOK! ~Anitra

Brittainy C. Cherry has been in love with words since the day she took her first breath--okay, perhaps not the first breath, but soon after! She lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her loved ones and loves a great, unique romance. The Space In Between is her debut novel and she looks forward to the world being able to read it! Other hobbies that she loves to take part in are writing screenplays, acting, and dancing--poorly of course. Coffee, chai tea, and wine are three things that she thinks every person should partake in! When she's not running around and crafting stories, she's probably playing with her wonderfully adorable fur babies who she loves to death!

*The Space In Between was written as a screenplay first, up until Brittainy's mom saw her struggling with it as a screenplay and said, "Why don't you write it as a novel instead?" Thanks, mom!

*Brittainy was a Theatre Arts major in college with a Creative Writing minor. Someone asked her what she was going to do with those two degrees and she informed them that she was going to be 'creative, duh!'

*It's quite common for Brittainy to break out into song and dance. Even in grocery stores.

*Her favorite animal is a panda ;)

*Brittainy was tagged as the shy, quiet girl throughout all K-12th grade of her schooling. Then in college, she was known for never shutting up! :)

*She loves her fur babies and is pretty sure they are spoiled to death.

I am excited that I got the opportunity to sit down and interview Cooper Davidson.  (Yes ladies, he is just as DREAMY in person) Here is what Cooper had to share with Can't Read Just One:

CRJO:  You experienced the ultimate betrayal, how were you able to get over it and even forgive Iris?

Cooper:  Wow, starting out with the big guns, eh? That’s a tough question. But there comes a point when you hold on to too much anger and it starts eating away at you. And I knew if I wanted things to work with Andie, I had to clean up the mess inside me to allow room for her to come inside.

CRJO: When you found Andrea again as an adult, when was that "moment" you knew she was the one for you?
Cooper:  Gosh…well, you know I’m a southern guy. And in the south there are two main rules. Rule number one: Love your mama. And rule number two: Love the girl who loves your mama. And I know it might sound like bullshit, but the way Andie welcomed my mom into her life…right then and there I knew. I knew there was no way in hell I couldn’t love her. Call it instant love, call it lust, it doesn’t matter what you call it. I just call it real.

CRJO:  Some people would have given up on a woman who continually pushed them away, what made you stay?
Cooper:  Because when she pushed, her eyes said stay.

CRJO:  What were you thinking the first time you saw Andrea dance in South Carolina?
Cooper:  Jesus, you’re gonna make me get emotional haha. That was right after a great visit with my mom when I saw her dancing. And she moved like she was lost, but with each step I watched her find her way on her own. I was honored to witness such a thing.

CRJO: The Gallery Show: Was the "Andrea Exhibit" your final attempt at winning her back? Or would you have chosen her as the subject of your exhibit whether she was in attendance or not?
Cooper:  You know, it was a toss up. I wanted her to show up, but if she didn’t, I would have looked around the room and had memories of real emotions that changed me into a better man. And as a photographer, raw, real emotion was always what I wanted to showcase. Ah hell, let’s be honest, I was trying to win her back. ;)

CRJO: Being close to your cousin Michelle, did you know her secret, or ever suspect it? Cooper:  *snickers* Let’s just say I was as shocked as everyone else. But I’ll never love her any less.

CRJO:  What are your thoughts on Ladasha?
Cooper:  She’s funny as hell. Stunning, ya know? Everyone knows that already. But the greatest thing about Dasha is how fucking smart she is. I think people underestimate her intelligence, I think she herself does too, but man…If you ever get the chance to just be around her, I’m pretty sure she’s going to say something that changes you and tugs at your heart. I love her to death.

CRJO:  I'm pretty sure America has fallen in love with you, just as much as Andrea has :) Will we see more of you in the future?
Cooper:  Who knows what the future may hold ;) But I think a few others have a story to tell, and I wouldn’t want to interfere.

Okay, we've asked you a bunch of serious questions, I'll let you off the hook Coop and ask you some fun ones....
CRJO: What is your favorite feature on Andrea?
Cooper:  Her dancer legs…the way those legs can move…long…smooth…flexible…*wipes brow and clears throat* Yup, her legs.

CRJO: What is her one thing/habit that annoys you?
Cooper:  She’s not gonna see this, right? Ha, okay. Between you and me, she chews gum so loud it makes me cringe. Don’t tell her I said that though, I really don’t wanna sleep on the couch.

CRJO:  Now that you've got your lady, do you guys still use "soda pop" as a code word when you are in the mood?
Cooper:  Ha, I call for a soda pop in front of her dad all the time, just to watch her blush. She always slaps me real hard afterwards.

CRJO: Speaking of soda: coke or pepsi?
Cooper: Are you kidding me? Coca Cola. And that has nothing to do with the last photoshoot I did for them ;)

CRJO: Chocolate or Vanilla?
Cooper:  *Smirks* Anitra...just for you I'm gonna say chocolate.

CRJO: Favorite food?
Cooper:  Leftover Chinese food.

CRJO: OK Coop, here's the question all the ladies want to know: boxers or briefs?
Cooper:  Boxer Briefs ;)

“I know that's what people say-- you'll get over it. I'd say it, too. But I know it's not true. Oh, you'll be happy again, never fear. But you won't forget. Every time you fall in love it will be because something in the man reminds you of him.”
― Betty Smith

I love to start my reviews with a post relevant to the book.  The Space in Between totally captured my heart.  Brittainy C. Cherry was able to show us that when you love someone, sometimes you have to realize the person you love is flawed and damaged.  DAMAGED but not BROKEN.  I struggle with writing reviews and not giving away too much of the storyline...so I will introduce you to some of my favorite characters in her book:

Andrea, just survived a life changing accident. She was a beautiful, strong, passionate dancer with dreams of living happily ever after with, Derrick, the man she loves and pursuing that dance dream. Shattered by the outcome of her accident, Andrea is lost. She's heartbroken. She isolates.  She gives up on the possibility of a happy future and she follows her best friend to New York, to just "exsist."  Andrea is alive but she's not living.  Ladasha, Andrea's best friend is smart, beautiful, supportive, and patient with Andrea as she goes through this tough time in her life.  Ladasha is that best friend we all wish we had.  She is always ready with an uplifting movie quote to help Andrea navigate through hard situations and emotions she's facing.  Although Ladasha is the best support system anyone could ask for, she too suffers from her own demons.  Throughout this whole book, Brittainy makes her characters pull on your heartstrings, I was standing on the sidelines praying these ladies found the solutions to their heartache...and I was cheering when she answered those prayers.

Eric is Andrea's brother.  Handsome, smart, and determined to help his sister through her heartache...he just doesn't know how.  Eric is trying to live his own life, engaged to his childhood sweetheart, he doesn't want to rub his happiness in Andrea's face.  Eric finds a friend in Ladasha. I think at first he appreciates how she is always there for his sister...but in the end, we find that it is much much more. Brittainy did a great job with her supporting cast.  We were able to see how family helps and sometimes hurts a situation, but no matter what they are always there for you.

Cooper Davidson...gorgeous, brilliant photographer and reality star, with a southern drawal that is a guaranteed "panty dropper." lol... To quote the book:

"Cooper Davidson had been sculpted by the gods.  His tan, smooth skin, his low buzzed blonde hair, and his green intense eyes were like the ones of fairy tales.  His lips were able to create a grin that made every woman melt and every straight man jealous."

I don't know about you, but that description alone would have sold me on this book! As swoon worthy as Cooper is, he too has just experienced a life changing situation.  He's happily married to a woman that delivers one confessing declaration that threatens to destroy him as well as the successful life he's built for himself.  Betrayed by the one person he loves, Cooper finds himself almost as lost as Andrea. Cooper and Andrea were friends as children, but when they meet again as adults it's during the worst point in their lives.

Andrea and Cooper attempt to help each other through this CHAOTIC time in their lives, hoping by doing so that they will find ORDER. Andrea finds out someone she placed on a pedestal fell short, and someone she vowed to never let close, changed her life.  Cooper finds that something that almost destroyed him, freed him to find his true self and what he really wanted out of life. While reading this book you get the pleasure of witnessing how they handle the space in between their chaos and order :)  I LOVED this book, and I give it 5 energetic stars *****  I've read it twice already, and I look forward to reading it again.

She’s scarred by her past.

ANDREA EVANS is traumatized and guilt-ridden by the death of her fiancée. Tired of the gossiping small town, she travels to New York City to pursue her dream of dance.

He’s uncertain of his future.

COOPER DAVIDSON is a famous photographer and reality television star trying to flee from his own life filled with paparazzi, mental health clinics, and a cheating wife who is pregnant.

When Andrea and Cooper’s paths cross, they realize how damaged and in need of escapism they both are. The two create an arrangement to explore the space in between chaos and order with one another. The rules are simple—no emotional connections, no talking about the past, no speaking of the future, and when one finds order, the other walks away.

All is well until Cooper accidentally falls in love with Andrea.

I am over the moon excited to be able to "spotlight" this up and coming, STAND OUT author, Theresa L. Henry!  IR is one of my favorite genres and this is the first author I've had the pleasure to spotlight in this genre.  Often times IR authors do not get the praise and recognition they deserve.  I pray this will be one tiny step in introducing those that follow my blog to the world and wealth of writers that shine in this genre!  Take a chance, step outside of your box, and READ something new...a GREAT romance is a GREAT romance no matter the race of the hero/heroine. ~Anitra

I grew up and currently live in London, England. I love to read, and discovered the enjoyment that can be found in books at around the age of nine. I have been an avid reader ever since.

Abandoned but not Alone is the first book I have ever attempted to write, and I loved creating it from start to finish. I want to write all the time, once I get started I just seem to have so much to say. If you knew me personally, your first comment would be, 'nothing new there'. I'm a great talker, putting pen to paper or in this instance, finger to keyboard, has given family and friends a respite from my constant chatter.

The following are the things I enjoy:
Reading - that's a given
Traveling - whenever I have the opportunity
Good food - especially when I don't have to cook it myself
Sports - watching rather than playing. I will watch very nearly any sport. My personal favorite is athletics. I do however draw the line at curling and bowls. Never heard of them, look them up, and then tell me I'm wrong.
Socializing - I love a good party or get together with family and friends
As a new writer, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me and share your opinion on Aviva and Jason's story.

Q.  What prompted your love of writing?

A.   Reading. I’ve always been an avid reader, and somewhere lurking in the back of my mind was the thought that I could write a book. I suspect I’m not alone in feeling this way. I’m sure, if asked, other avid readers would probably say the same thing. I can honestly say my love of writing began after the completion of my first book, Abandoned but not Alone. Once my ideas began to solidify for this book, I became extremely excited. Now I would be content if I could write all day, every day.

Q.  How long have you been writing?

A.   I’ve now been writing for about nine months now. I don’t do things by halves it would seem. I didn’t start off writing short stories or articles. I just jumped in and went for the full length novel. After all, I had nothing to lose. No one knew me or anything about me. If no one liked my writing, I would be in exactly the same position as my starting point…but if they did, maybe writing could be the career change I had inadvertently been looking for.

Q.  What was your inspiration for the Kingdom Series?

A.    I adore books with strong lead characters. When I complete a book I have been reading, I want to remember each character, whether I loved them or loathed them. I also love books that show loving familial interaction. I also knew that I wanted the story to be about an interracial couple. These facts were my starting point for the Kingdom series.

Q.  Aviva is quite a unique heroine. Did you get inspiration for her character from someone in your life or is she a complete creation of your imagination?

A.   Mostly, Aviva is a product of my imagination…mostly. I think she and I share the same sense of humour, and we both have a tendency to be a bit bossy. I think that’s where the similarity ends. I will say however that I really like her as a character. Quite a few women who have written to me have also expressed this. They’ve said something along the lines of, and I feel the same way, “They would like Aviva for a friend if she were a real person.”

Q.  What is the most challenging thing you've encountered as a new writer?

A.   Two things stick out for me. Number one: Completing both books. One reads all the time that finishing a book is one of the most difficult hurdles a new writer faces. I also found this to be true. The ideas were all there; the scenes were mostly all written I just needed to bring the story to a conclusion. Abandoned but not Alone just wouldn’t let me do it. The story just kept growing and growing. There were still so many unanswered questions; Aviva and Jason still had so much more to say. It was at this point that I started to get worried. My thoughts went something like this: “Oh, my God, this book is looking to be way longer than I can manage. What the heck (substitute whatever word you like for ‘heck’) am I going to do!?” So I ended on a cliff-hanger. I got a bit of stick for that I can tell you! The readers’ assumption being that the ending was a calculated and cynical move meant to elicit further revenue. How wrong they were. Abandoned but not Alone ended as it did, because I was a new writer who contained my story in the only way I knew how at that point in time.

Number two: Getting past the bouts of self-doubt. Was the success of Abandoned but not Alone a fluke? Could I write another book? Would anyone like book two, For Love and Vengeance? I could go on, but I’ve probably made my point. Self-doubt can be crippling up if you allow it. Don’t allow it to be your master!
Q.  What authors have inspired you?
A.    Authors that inspire me within the interracial genre are writers such as Pepper Pace and Sienna Mynx. I’m also a massive fan of fantasy fiction. I like Stephen Donaldson’s: The chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever (even though TC drove me mad); I also thoroughly enjoyed the first three books by George R.R. Martin in the Game of Thrones series. I’m not going to read any more of his books from this point forward. I will however continue to watch the TV series. I also adore, Jane Austin.

Q.  What was the last book you read?
A.    SELFMADE, by a UK author called, Carl Foster. It’s an inspirational book.

Q.  Can't Read Just One is a blog that focuses on supporting Indie & New authors.  What advice would you give other Indie/New authors in the process of releasing their first book?
A.   Stop hesitating. Dive in, you have nothing to lose! Also, try to develop a thick skin, you may need its protection once those reviews start coming in! Always remember, someone, somewhere is going to hate your writing. I’m not going to try to tell anyone not to worry about what the naysayers write in reviews, I’d be a hypocrite if I did. However, you get over it, and before long you’ll just shrug and move on. Perspective, it all about perspective!

Q. What is your next book release? What projects can we look forward to you releasing in the future?
A.   My next release will be another story in the Kingdom series. The book will be Steve’s story. I’ve started a stand-alone book, set in London that I think may have merit. However, my priority is to write at least two more books in the Kingdom series before I release anything else. At least that’s the plan at the moment.

Favorite color:  Blue
Favorite food:   I have two: Oxtail stew, Caribbean style. Prawn and Muscles in garlic and butter, served with crusty French bread and a glass (or two) of chilled Pinot Grigio.
Favorite movie:   Oldies: Imitation of Life. Sorry, can’t resist, and Now Voyager. Sort of newish (for want of a better word): The Shawshank Redemption. Last few years: Avatar.
Favorite book:   Anything that offers escapism for a few hours.
Favorite type of music:  Rare groove /R&B.

"You don't choose your family.  They are God's gift to you, as you are to them."  ~Desmond Tutu

I love to start every review with a quote...something that reflects one of the main themes I derived from the book I read.  Both of the books in the Kingdom Series screams out FAMILY to me (and several other things but I'll focus on family for this review).  Family isn't always BLOOD relations, family are the ones that are there for you when you need them and when you don't even know you need them.  Jason King got introduced to a family he didn't even know he had in Abandoned But Not Alone, but I think in For Love and Vengeance he truly learned the value of it, as he grew to love them as well.  Jason is my favorite character in the Kingdom Series, how could he NOT be?  Tall, GORGEOUS, green-eyed, dimpled, SEX-GOD....WHEW!!! There were several times I had to catch myself wiping drool off my kindle screen, anytime she described ANY part of him during these books I had a swoon moment!!  I'm going to try to introduce you to some characters in my review without giving away too much of the storyline.  YOU my dear, have to read the books and experience them yourself!

Family Brings Love
Falling in love with someone isn't always going to be easy.  Anger...tears...laughter...it's when you want to be together despite it all.  That's when you truly love each other.  When Jason meets Aviva I do believe he got more than he bargained for.  Aviva is a tiny little fireball.   She literally crashes into this man and I believe it was love at first sight. They, however couldn't be more different.  The obvious difference is she is a petite, BEAUTIFUL, mocha colored beauty, truly the polar opposite to his towering form and blonde features.  However they are drawn to each other, and after the connection is made, nothing can keep them apart.  When Jason finds Aviva, Jason finds love, something he's been denied most of his life.  Jason seems to be guarded with everyone else accept Aviva.  Her lively sense of humor, and no nonsense personality keeps Jason in line and in love in both of the Kingdom books. Aviva is one of my new favorite book heroines.  She had me literally laughing out loud in book one of the series.  Sometimes I want to shake her, she picks the most inopportune times to challenge Jason...yet I can't help but love her.  In 'For Love and Vengeance' someone tries to take Jason's love away...you won't believe the lengths Jason will go to, to get her back, and to show those who had the nerve to touch what is his...what true pain really is.

Family Brings History & Unconditional Love
Enter the Kingdoms:  Jackson, a regal, handsome fatherly figure, determined to show Jason how much he's wanted even if Jason doesn't WANT to be wanted. Jason doesn't make loving him easy.  No matter how rude, disrespectful, unrelenting Jason may be, Jackson still shows him unconditional love and acceptance.   Jacob who is truly Jason's other half.  Equal to Jason in every way...Jake is not willing to put up with the hard shell Jason presents to the world.  Jake like Aviva checks Jason on his bull shit, he wants Jason to know he's loved and wanted, but he won't be a doormat in the process.  Joshua...now I know I said Jason was my favorite, but I do believe Josh is neck in neck for the title!  Josh is the youngest of the Kingdoms, and his light hearted nature brings a smile to everyone around him. Josh is the one that holds the team together, he knows when to divert the raging emotions of his older siblings, and he brings the comic relief in Aviva's absence.  I dare you NOT to fall in love with Josh.  Did I fail to mention that all three of the Kingdom men, are blonde haired, green-eyed...MUSCLED to no end Hotties?!?!? If I failed to mention that, Theresa does NOT disappoint, she makes sure to help us bask in their FINENESS throughout the book, through her vivid depictions of them :)

The father and brothers Jason never knew he had come into his life at the time when he needs them most.  They are determined to show Jason he might have been abandoned, but he is alone no longer.  When those that come to challenge Jason and all he holds dear, it is family that is there to help him win back his love....literally and figuratively speaking.

Abandoned But Not Alone, was a heartfelt, HILARIOUS, love story.  Jason shared his backstory, he found Aviva and the Kingdoms, and we all fell in love during the process.  For Love and Vengeance, however,  was a fast paced, action packed, love induced, joy ride!! I can truly say, Theresa Henry kept my attention from page 1.  I read and enjoyed the first book in the series, however the 2nd book brought that extra UMPH that I think the first book was missing...OVERALL the entire series is leaving me panting and dying to read more!! I give For Love and Vengeance 5 STARS ***** I know if you take the time to sit down and introduce yourself to the Kingdom Series you will love it as much as I do.  For an authors FIRST book/series she hit the ball out of the park!

"One of the most beautiful qualities of friendship is to understand and to be understood." ~ Lucius Seneca

Book 1 in the Ariya Adam's trilogy's biggest theme to me was "friendship." This Lucius Annaeus Seneca quote was extremely relevant because this group of friends truly had to be accepting and understanding of each other in order for their friendships to survive.  In life you often find out things about the people you love that you have to learn to "accept" even if you don't initially understand it.  I think Ariya learned this lesson in book 1 of her trilogy.

Ariya is your average college girl, who enters her senior year and learns some life changing things about herself and those around her.  This new understanding brings her closer to some of the people in her life....and causes her to fear others.

I liked this book because it truly showcased this tight knit group of friends that protected each other, no matter what. It is always refreshing to read a book where you love more characters than you dislike :)  This book was filled with an amazing group of "supporting" characters.  Everyone needs a best friend like Caroline, who deals with your mood swings, gets up no matter what time it is to listen to you cry/complain/vent about your life, and always has the perfect cup of coffee or tea waiting for you when you need it the most...or a sexy best friend like Riley, who is always there to pick up the pieces after the most recent jerk lets you down, always has welcoming arms to hold you, and there may just be something more there yet to discover....then there's Nick, it's always a nice to meet a new friend that you feel cares about you just as much as your old friends do, who is equally protective, and just happens to be your best friend's (Caroline) new beau.  Throughout this novel I found myself wishing I had a group of friends like this when I was in college....however, the number of wonderful qualities they possess, they also possess an equal number of secrets.  Will Ariya be able to handle it all and keep those friendships when all is revealed?

Enter James...if ever there were a swoon worthy new guy, James is the King. He transfers into Ariya's college during Ariya's senior year and turns her world upside down.  After a string of disappointments in her dating life, she was content and resigned to finishing out her senior year enjoying her friends while being single.  However, one look at James and those well made plans are up for debate. James quickly becomes a staple in her core group of friends. The more time Ariya spends around him the more she is drawn to him, and the more the attraction grows.  She waits for him to advance, yet they seem to take 2 steps forward and 3 steps back.  Will this attraction go anywhere or is it one-sided?

With the arrival of so many new students transferring in during their senior year, not all of them fit in with group.  Devon, at first glance is extremely attractive, yet he is just as much an enigma.  Although he seems to have ties to Ashley, he can't take his eyes off Ariya.  Although she does her best to stay away from him, Devon plays a huge role in the life changing events that soon overtake Ariya and those she has grown to love.

If you want to know the answers to the questions I posed, I suggest you read Protected for yourself :)  It was definitely a fun and interesting paranormal read that kept my attention, and has me looking forward to what happens next in book 2.  I would definitely give Protected by Anna Applegate
4 out of 5 stars!

Kirsty Dallas is a born and bred Aussie who loves flip-flops, demin jeans and tattoos!! She lives on the Gold Coast with her family and when she’s not sitting in front of her computer she will more than likely be found in front of a book, OR hanging out with her five year old daughter Sommah-Rose. She has an incurable and rare illness known as ‘kitchenitis’ and has terrible vacuum cleaner allergies, never-the-less she soldiers on and somehow manages to keep her home somewhat clean!! If you were to see her sitting in a bar she would never knock back a cider and it will take more than a few to get her on the dance floor, but once she is up there you will find yourself in hysterics! She seriously cannot dance! She loves most music genres, rock, pop, RnB, classical and rarely watches T.V or movies. Her favorite marvel comic superhero is most definitely Thor, and fellow Aussie Chris Hemsworth may or may not have had something to do with that.

Kirsty wrote her first story at just 14 years of age, a 30,000 word story about dragons, but it would be another 20 years before she would consider her passion for writing could in fact be a profession. Saving Ella took a total of 5 weeks to write, followed by another 8 weeks of editing, producing a cover and releasing via the Amazon store. Her second novel, Breeze of Life has just been completed and is in editing stage right now, with an expected release date set for August.

The protection every child is owed was lost on Ella Munroe. Her tiny body was beaten, bruised, cut and bloodied. And the thing about pain, it demands to be felt……. While searching for affection, Ella gave away her body and her escape was found in drugs. Self-loathing led to self-destruction and she tried to cut that hate from herself. They say pain makes you stronger, fear makes you braver; Ella had more strength and bravery than most. With her head down, scars covered and heart locked behind a wall of steel Ella ran. On the streets she may have found her freedom but she was still alone, until she found ‘Mercy’s’, until she found Jax.

Born a warrior, Jaxon Carter could intimidate with no more than a glance, but this warrior was not born to destroy, he was born to protect. To Jax, Ella was much more than a tiny beaten girl, Ella was an angel. Ella was Jax’s angel, she was his to protect and cherish. She was his to love and although Ella’s first instinct was to run, Jax made her yearn for things she had long forgotten. In capturing her heart, Jax freed Ella. In embracing her imperfections, Jax owned Ella. Sometimes though, you have to fight for love and sometimes blood is destined to run a river. Sometimes, hate trumps love.
All Jax had to do was keep Ella safe, it all seemed so easy….

“Your scars might remind you of where you’ve been angel, but they don’t have to dictate where you’re going.” ~ Jaxon Carter

Q: What prompted your love of writing?

A: Strangely enough it was a Movie that inspired me to write. I saw The Never Ending Story when I was 10 years old and it captured my heart and imagination. From that moment I knew I wanted to create other universes to steal audiences away too.

Q:  What was your inspiration for Saving Ella?

A:  It's a topic that is close to my heart, having endured a violent relationship (though not to Ella's extent) I understand the intense emotions that come with feeling trapped and afraid. The characters names were created by my sister-in-law, Kylie, who also acts as my Manager. One day she said to me, "you know, I love the names Jax and Ella, I wish someone would write a book about them." BAM, that day I began writing.

Q:   Saving Ella was such an intense and emotional story.  Did you see any of yourself in either of the characters you wrote?

A:  I see parts of me in many of the characters I wrote. I am definitely a fighter (Ella), I am a protector (Jax), I am a massive joker (Charlie), and I am a mother (Mercy).. I also have a terrible potty mouth!!!

Q:  Will you continue to stick with one genre or do you see yourself writing in several?

A:  I adore Contemporary romance so I guess it will be my LEAD genre, but I do have extensive plans and plots to write a massive end of earth, doomsday angel vs demons paranormal romance... It will consist of eight books or more and I will make a start on it in 2014... I like to switch back and forth between contemporary and paranormal when I read, same will likely go for my writing.

5    Q:  Who are some of your favorite authors?

A:  I love Amy Bartol!! I adore her books and she has become a wonderful facebook friend to me.. I also love Paullina Simons, Gena Showalter, Krelsey Cole, Shelly Crane, Jessica Sorenson, Abbi Glines... that's my short list, there are plenty more.

Q:  What advice do you have for other new/indie authors?

A:  Number 1: EDIT TILL YOU ARE READY TO DROP!!!!  So many self published authors miss the simple stuff. I know Saving Ella still had a few glitches after many weeks of Beta edits and mistakes were still found after 5th, 6th and 7th read-throughs by myself and my manager Kylie.

Number 2: Bloggers are your new best friends, embrace, love, bond!!!!  Number three, NEVER GIVE UP!! write every day and push yourself. Don't be afraid to create a journey that is a little bit scary and edgy!!

Q:      Music and books seem to be intertwined lately in contemporary novels.  If you had to pick one song that you felt represented Jax what would it be?  Same question for Ella?

A:  I slipped Jax's song into the novel. Nickleback's 'Savin Me'. Jax needed saving almost as much as Ella.. Ella's song was without doubt Broken Girl by Matthew West.  That is the song that you will see in the book trailer I produced. It captures Ella beautifully.   A very powerful song!

8    Q: Casting:  It’s always fun to hear the muses authors have in mind when creating their heros/heroines.  Did you have an actress/actor/model in mind for Ella & Jax while writing? If YES, who?

A:  LOL, those who have been following me on facebook will already realize that no movie can be made without Chris Hemsworth as my Jax (give me a minute while I swoon) He was my Jax from day dot.  Either Mila Kunis or Nina Dobrev would make perfect Ellas.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Where do I begin?

I have been writing since I was in grade school and had my first novel, Descendant of Strife, published in 2007. It is about an orphaned sorcerer who learns dark secrets of his past that end up entangling him in a secret war between heaven and hell that spans nearly half a millennium.

Becoming an author always been a dream of mine since as far back as I can remember. I think it started, though, with a brief writing exercise I was given in kindergarten. We were supposed to write a two to three sentence story (or maybe a paragraph) to do with Easter. I ended up writing a little over a page. Yep…go figure.

I ended up graduating high school when I was 16 years old and attending St. John’s University in New York for a while. Then I moved to Florida and graduated from the University of South Florida with Magna Cum Laude honors and a BS degree in Business Administration.

I’ve recently completed my 2nd and 3rd novels, Empyreal Illusions and Awakening the Fire (YA fantasy). They are part of The Inferno Unleashed series.

“It takes courage to live, yes, but it takes true bravery to stand your ground in a world aligned against you.”

At one point or another, everybody inevitably feels that they are bearing the weight of the world on their shoulders and their back is giving in. For Breena Taljain, the central protagonist of Empyreal Illusions, it’s as commonplace of a feeling as breathing. Surprisingly enough, the idea for it came to me while I was sitting in the university library before a final exam. I remember writing the first five pages instead of studying but somehow managed to pull off a good grade anyway!

Now I am getting ready to begin my fourth novel, which will be set in an entirely different universe than Empyreal Illusions. It will be a YA romance with a tinge of fantasy. Stay tuned :)

Of course, I love reading as much as I do writing. Outside of my literary pursuits, though, I enjoy playing sports and I’m a fitness enthusiast. There’s nothing that a good workout can’t help solve!

Thanks for your support and for being part of the adventure (and what a one it is and will be!!!)

Q:      I find it awesome and intriguing that you have been writing since kindergarten. With an early love of writing, what made you choose YA/Fantasy as your genre of choice?

A:  Well, I always had an interest in fantasy since I was young. I always saw it as a perfect escape from all the trivial aspects of day to day life. Plus, in my opinion, fantasy gives me the most creative freedom. I chose YA because the story idea I had (Empyreal Illusions & Awakening the Fire) would have been best with a youth as a protagonist, rather than an adult. Also there are no raunchy scenes or foul language in those novels, and so it seemed to go all the more towards being a YA work. That being said, I’m actually branching out for my next WIP, a romance novel called The Lioness!

Q:       What was your inspiration for Empyreal Illusions?

A:  Good question. Funny story. The main inspiration for this novel was a song called Firewalk by the band Beseech. One line in the chorus just invoked a feeling, an idea, and I could feel the gears in my head turning the minute I heard it. It’s hard to describe. I was actually listening to the song for the first time while I was in the college library, ‘studying’ for a business final. Instead of studying I was able to get the first five pages written and even pass the exam with flying colors. Who would have known that a simple idea I was doing just to pass the time and that was originally meant to be a short, SHORT story -  a novella, even – would end up being an ambitious work spanning years and finally releasing on May 29, 2013? Not I, for one! J

Q:       Do you see yourself in any of your characters?

A:  Honestly, there is a small bit of me in all of my characters. One minor personality trait here, one preference there…. However, the character that I find myself most similar to who I modeled part of my personality out of more than any of the others  is Ophion. He is kind yet firm, witty yet sarcastic, and he leaves the protagonist flustered and frustrated on dozens of occasions. He is a hydromancer (skilled in water-based magic) and he makes his debut in Awakening the Fire (release date forthcoming).

Q:       Your first publication was Descendant of Strife. Now you have Empyreal Illusions, and Awakening the Fire to add to your list of work. Out of these three books which character has been the most enjoyable for you to write?

A:  Of these three novels, the character Galbrecht Atalir (also known as Ghariel Lodan) has been the most enjoyable to write. He is the deuteragonist, or 2nd protagonist, in Empyreal Illusions and Awakening the Fire. Unlike the main character -  14 year old Breena Taljain, who readers first meet while she is living in the slums of a shanty town, miserable and without the slightest inkling of hope or conviction – Ghariel is an adult doctor. His life hits rock bottom when the criminal underworld murdered his family seemingly without reason 7 years before Empyreal Illusions takes place. The authorities did not look into the matter, and so he entered the underworld looking for justice. He ultimately failed and was forced to flee and change his name to Galbrecht Atalir. Now he is a washed up doctor with a reputation for no-nonsense, violence, and alcoholism.

The reason he was the most enjoyable is because I get to show how a tiny clue leads him on the path to finding the justice he once sought out and renews his faith in life. I find his story very relatable, and it’s just the tragedy of it all that made it a pleasure to construct, resolve, and ultimately portray to all.

Q:       Who are some of your favorite authors?
A:  As you can probably guess, there are WAY too many to name, since I am an avid of a reader as I am a writer. However, a few names that instantly come to mind upon hearing that question (and some of their works) is Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn trilogy), Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time), Mercedes Lackey (Valdemar), Tad Williams (Otherland), R. Scott Bakker (Prince of Nothing), John Marco (Bronze Knight), and Robert McCammon (Swan Song).

Q:       What advice would you give other Indie / New authors?

A:   There are a few tidbits of advice I would love to give other Indie / New authors. First and foremost, writing is re-writing. Finishing the first draft is only the first piece of the puzzle. Do not despair if your first draft is not everything you expected it to be. It happens. Editing, re-writing, proofing, and repeating again is the key to producing the best novel. Additionally, each time you re-write or edit, or write new material period, your kills will become sharper and your editor’s eye a little clearer. You grow as much as your story does.

Secondly, do not give up. You are your own harshest critic. All the world can love your novel and yet you, the author, will always be able to find one little imperfection here, one thing you would love to change … don’t take it with a heavy heart. It’s just how it goes, and it doesn’t mean your book is bad at all. You simply wrote it, and it’s your baby!

Thirdly – promote, network, and market! I think social media is a wonderful way to promote and get involved these days, and I cannot stress the marketing potential of them enough. I recommend all authors to at least have a Facebook and/or Twitter page that they dedicate to marketing and promoting. Of course, every post should NOT be spamming your own work or promoting it constantly, but of the most part, tasteful promotions and teasers / tidbits do well. Of course, there are others sites available, and those are just examples. Networking is just as important. I met some of my closest author friends through twitter and facebook, and even a year later we still talk on a nearly daily basis. I support them and they do the same for me. Lastly, market! The publishing world is a difficult business. There are a myriad number of authors and standing out amongst them is NOT an easy task. Market your work and yourself. Make a brand for your book, a tagline that sticks in peoples’ head, but once again, don’t do it one post after another after another. That would be considered spamming, and people are more apt to block you and ignore you than not. As with anything in life, market and promote with reason and prudence.

The tag line is very important. For example, for Empyreal Illusions, mine revolves around ‘Courage to Live.’ The opening quote of the novel is “It takes courage to live, yes, but it takes true bravery to stand your ground in a world aligned against you.” Most of the marketing material I have shows that quote on one part or another. The hashtag I promote on Twitter is #CourageToLive. I’ve had a few people come up to me and say, “Oh, I know that quote! I like it. I can’t forget it!” Once a little uhing like that sticks in their head – and the more positive, the better – than the likelihood of them remembering your book and buying it sky rockets. As with anything, word of mouth will likely follow, and that is the best – and free – advertising available.

A lot of people ask me how long I've been writing.  What made me want to write?  Stuff like that.  A lot of people say they've always written.  That they knew they'd be a writer since they could hold a pen.  I wrote stuff, like for contests when I was younger, but nothing major.  Actually I look at those stories and totally giggle!  Like there was this one with a hot air balloon and a monkey that jumps on a trampoline in the middle of it.  Where was my mind?  Yeah I don't know.

Oh, did I get off topic?  Another thing about me that happens a lot.  What was I trying to say?  Oh!  Writing.  Well, I’m ashamed to say that I wasn’t born a writer.  Writing was thrust upon me when I realized I was a 20 year old new mommy that had nothing to do with her time, so I read.  And read and read and read and read… yeah, you get it.  Then, suddenly I started writing.  I’ve always had conversations and scenes and crap like that in my head, and found out when I started putting it ‘on paper’, I really liked it.  Bam!  The obsession begins!

And just fun little facts about yours truly...

I can bend my arm the other way... like the wrong way.  Totally gross, right?  Lol.

Cheesecake is my all time favorite food.  I would eat cheesecake for the rest of my life, no matter how much my butt and thighs will pay for it.

I'm a dork.  Like full out nerd.  I have a Harry Potter closet (which is under the stairs, btw... which makes it doubly awesome) full of all my collectables my kids are not allowed to touch.  Including the first movie trailer film reel.

Mountain Dew was a gift to writers like me from the writing gods.

It's stupid to fall for your brother's ex. It's even worse to enlist another's help to win the ex over. But Brody is desperate and Hayley, his partner in American Sign Language, is more than willing to lend him a few tips. She’s the school’s ‘matchmaker’, and with her bizarre and positive personality, Brody finds her easy to talk too, even about the most awkward situations. Hayley’s tips seem to be working, but as Brody learns more about his matchmaker, he starts finding reasons to spend time with her, and not the girl he thought he was in love with.

But Hayley isn’t ready to fall for anyone. Labeled the “Funny Fat Friend” within her group, her self image makes it impossible for Brody to share his feelings without Hayley shrugging it off as a joke.

Convincing her Brody can, and did, fall for the “Funny Fat Friend” turns out to be a lot harder than simply falling in love.
